Can Hope Be False?

Can Prayer Heal?

Definitely! And, best of all, you don't have to beg God for a healing, all you have to do is believe that the healing is going to occur. That simple act of faith, demonstrated by Jesus over and over again, mobilizes forces present within each and every one of us, forces of unimaginable power.

Jesus said: "WHATSOEVER ye shall ask in prayer, BELIEVING ye shall receive". Do you think Jesus lied? I don't. He did not say you have to beg God, or follow certain rituals or doctrines. All He said was that if you believe that you are going to receive what you are praying for, you will receive it.

“But”, you might say, “what if I don’t believe in Jesus? What if I am an atheist or a member of a different religion? Does that mean this power is not available to me?”.

Good news, my friend. In 1920, T. C. Graves discovered that a patient's symptoms are altered in some way (i.e., alleviated or exacerbated) by an otherwise inert treatment, due to the individual expecting or believing that it will work. And "because it is the subject that has the subject-centered response and  not the administered substance that generates the observed effect”, Graves called his discovery  the Placebo Effect. Isn’t it ironical that it took almost 2000 years for modern science to discover, what Jesus preached already in biblical times? You might not believe in Jesus, but for heavens sake, at least believe in His teachings!

While Prayer induced healings are by far not the norm, there have been many cases were sudden healings occurred immediately after or even during Prayer.

The latest case is that of Victoria Roberts of Portland, Oregon, a precious seven year old child who was about to undergo surgery, when her attending physician, pediatric oncologist Dr. Colleen Delaney, discovered that the cancer had mysteriously vanished. Her mother, Jacqueline Roberts, credited God and Prayers (see CNN's Health Videos from August 13, 2006, and search for "Girl's cancer disappears")

We recently received an email from Jacqueline Roberts, Victoria's mom, in which she asks to continue the prayers - WE WILL DO SO, AND WE HOPE YOU, THE READER OF THIS PAGE, WILL ADD A PRAYER FOR THIS BRAVE LITTLE GIRL AS WELL!)

What the Bible has to say

Mat: 21:22 "All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive"

Mat:8:8: The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. Mat:8:13: And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

Mat:17:20: And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Mat:9:29: Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

Luk:8:25: And he said unto them, Where is your faith?

The real importance of faith by the afflicted to receive healing was tragically demonstrated when Jesus returned to His hometown and preached in the synagogue. Many of the people who attended knew Him and said "Is not this Joseph's son?" (Luke 4:22). They knew Him since He was a child and simply could not believe that one of them could heal simply through faith. It was because of this lack of faith that even Jesus was unable to heal (Mat:13:58: And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief).

(What you might not have known - [credit for this paragraph is given to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isa] :  Isa (عيسىĪsā), often seen as Isa, son of Mary (`Īsā ibn Maryam) is the Arabic name for Jesus, who is one of the Prophets of Islam. According to the Qur'an, he was one of God's most beloved prophets sent specifically to guide the Children of Israel (Beni Israel). Christian Arabs refer to Jesus as Yasu' al-Masih or Isa al-Masih (يسوع المسيح Yasū`a al-Masīħ).

Excerpts from the Koran:

(وأوحى ربك إلى النحل أن اتخذي من الجبال بيوتاً ومن الشجر، ومما يعرشون، ثم كلي من كل الثمرات فاسلكي سبل ربك ذللا ، يخرج من بطونها شراب مختلف ألوانه فيه شفاء للناس، إن في ذلك لآية لقوم يتفكرون) النحل 68

Allah says; Seek help with patience and prayer: it is indeed hard, except to those who are humble.” (2: 45)

Jewish views of miraculous healings
(credit - source)

In rabbinic Judaism, most rabbis of the Talmud held that the laws of nature were inviolable. The idea of miracles that contravened the laws of nature were hard to accept; however, at the same time they affirmed the truth of the accounts in the Tanakh. Therefore some explained that miracles were in fact natural events that had been set up by God at the beginning of time. As summarized by Maimonides:

"...Our Sages... said.. as regards miracles:... that the miracles are to some extent also natural: for they say, when God created the Universe with its present physical properties, He made it part of these properties, that they should produce certain miracles at certain times, and the sign of a prophet consisted in the fact that God told him to declare when a certain thing will take place, but the thing itself was effected according to the fixed laws of Nature."
